Do you have a conversation you have been dreading and putting off?
Chances are it has to do with something you wat someone to change.
Take a second to think about what’s causing the dread…
Are you… afraid of hurting their feelings?
… concerned about how they will respond?
… unsure about how to address the topic?
First – know that you are not alone.
Giving feedback, especially negative (ahem… we prefer the word “constructive”) feedback falls into the category of difficult conversations….
…and difficult conversations are… well… difficult (to restate the obvious). 🙂
The good news is that with proper planning and preparation, you can get through these difficult conversations without trauma to either party. I know it’s hard to believe – I’ve had conversations I thought wouldn’t turn out well, but ended up going fine.
Now I’m not saying every conversation will be perfect. Unfortunately, you can only control your side of it. But a well-planned conversation has a much better chance of getting a positive response.
Want to know more? Check back tomorrow where I’ll address strategies to get past your dread and procrastination surrounding feedback conversations.
